In November, the 10am Kindergartners responded to the call to embrace UW by making 100 cards and gift bags for students. Led by Pam Tharl, Nathan Keyes, Liz Whitney, and Elizabeth O’Shea, the children delivered the cards to Janie Stuart who in turn passed them on to students in need of a little encouragement during finals week at the beginning of December, including University Ministries’ student leaders.
“At our student leadership Christmas party, I was filled with holiday joy when I heard that the UPC Kindergartners made us gift bags! I was even surprised: when you spend 90% of your time around other college students, you forget that you can be part of a bigger community of all ages, like the one we have here at UPC. As I opened up my bag of Smarties, Hershey’s Kisses, and candy canes, I noticed a small note inside as well. With the help of their teachers, the Kindergartners had made a little Christmas card. On the inside was a verse and words of encouragement for us college students as we went into finals week.
“I knew that the little ones probably had no idea what college was (I don’t think I did as a Kindergartner), but that’s what was so great about it. They simply and joyfully made the gifts and gave them. The experience reminded me that within the stress of college and finals, Jesus calls us to come to him with the faith of a child. He calls us to live life simply and joyfully because his spirit is in us. He is with us every step of the way.”
